MORE THAN JUST READING, WRITING, and computing -- THINKING+

We don't just teach students to think.  We teach them to think with compassion, empathy, and understanding.   Solving our world’s challenges depends on that.   The essence of that teaching is the Mash-Up Curriculum, a cross-curricular smashing together of ideas, concepts and problem-solving that teaches us to think more deeply about the world.  "Mash-Ups" are six week long, interdisciplinary, co-taught, topic-based courses -- they are anything but your traditional science, math or history class.

IDENTITY and character development

Who am I? Whose am I?  Where do I come from?  What makes me, me?  What do I like and why?  What are my gifts, talents and passions?  These are the essential questions we help students to understand about themselves over the course of their high school career.   We need to know who we are to know where we are going and where we can contribute in the world.   

We also need to learn discreet skills like time management, organization, communication and team collaboration.  These "basic" skills are the skills necessary to providing the foundation for deeper thinking about more complex challenges of the future.

flexible and dynamic TIME

We use our time on what we prioritize.  And those priorities have barely changed in 125 years of education -- standardization, single subject learning, early school days, longer school days.  The CUBE is reexamining time to acknowledge that learning happens everywhere, with every one at every time.  

The days of limiting ourselves to time-based learning must change.   We have to start thinking of time as a flexible resource that acknowledges unique learning behaviors that are context and resource dependent.

human-computer Interaction

All interactions - human to computer, computer to computer and human to human - are becoming more and more complex.  Understanding that complexity and learning to move among it is essential to navigating the future successfully.  That's why we have a focus on computer science, or rather computational thinking for all students. 

You don't have to be a programmer or sit behind a computer all day.  You do need to understand how computers play an integral part of our world now and an increasingly larger part of our world in the future.   Whether you are an artist or an engineer, a banker or a forklift driver, computers are part of our jobs.

not just college, there is more

College should be an essential opportunity for students of tomorrow. It shouldn’t be the only choice.  Students will need to explore, change and adapt to possibility as it appears.  We should prepare them to pivot, change direction, tackle tough challenges, and create new opportunities.

Most research predicts that a high school graduate in 2022 will change jobs 10-12 times before they are 50 years old.   Even crazier, the same research suggests that up to 50% of the jobs in 2030 haven't even been created yet.   Our kids need to be prepared for a future that doesn’t look like the world we live in today.
